About SEED:
SEED (Society for Socio-Economic & Ecological Development) is a Kolkata based NGO working in the Sundarbans for over two decades to empower climate-affected communities. Through integrated programs in water conservation, child development & education, climate-resilient livelihoods, mangrove restoration, biodiversity and environment education, SEED has impacted over 3.66 Lakhs lives while building climate resilience in one of India’s most vulnerable ecological zones.
About the Project:
The project aims to ensure year-round access to safe drinking water for all 1,150 families across 6 villages in Ghoramara Island, address irrigation water scarcity for approximately 250 farmers, and improve the income of 50 landless families through small-scale livelihood activities in one of India's most climatevulnerable regions in the Sundarbans.
Position Overview:
The Field Facilitators will work at the grassroots level in Ghoramara Island, serving as the primary link between the PMU and project beneficiaries. They will be responsible for community mobilization, facilitating formation of community groups, organizing training programs, monitoring field-level activities, and ensuring active participation of villagers in all project interventions. The role requires strong community engagement skills, local knowledge and commitment to working in a remote, climatevulnerable island setting.
Key Responsibilities:
◆ Mobilize communities across Ghoramara’s 6 villages through door-to-door visits, meetings and awareness drives on climate resilient water and ◆ livelihoods. Facilitate beneficiary identification, participatory planning and formation of community groups such as Water User Groups and Village Water & Sanitation Committees.
◆ Support installation and maintenance of raised handpumps and restoration of agricultural ponds through active community participation.
◆ Coordinate livelihood activities for women and landless families, including training, on-site support, and market linkage for income generation.
◆ Regularly monitor project sites, maintain records, collect data on key indicators and submit progress reports with documentation.
◆ Coordinate with Panchayat and other local stakeholders for smooth implementation.
◆ Assist in disaster preparedness and response, ensuring continued access to safe water during emergencies.
Qualifications and Experience:
◆ Minimum qualification: High School (Class 10).
◆ At least 5 years’ experience in community or rural development, agriculture extension, or social mobilization.
◆ Prior experience in remote or coastal areas, preferably the Sundarbans region.
◆ Strong understanding of local culture, livelihoods, and community dynamics.
◆ Experience in WASH, water conservation, or livelihood projects preferred.
◆ Familiarity with government schemes on water, agriculture, and rural development.
◆ Experience engaging marginalized groups—SC, minorities, women, and landless families.
◆ Basic knowledge of local agriculture and income-generation practices.
Skills, Competencies & Working Conditions:
◆ Strong communication and community engagement skills in Bengali (Hindi/English desirable).
◆ Proven ability to mobilize communities, build trust, and work independently in remote settings.
◆ Physically fit and adaptable to challenging terrain, weather, and travel by foot or boat.
◆ Basic record-keeping, reporting, and mobile communication skills.
◆ Team-oriented, empathetic, and committed to SEED’s mission of sustainability and social justice.
◆ Must be a resident of Ghoramara or nearby areas with good knowledge of local context.
◆ Field-based role requiring daily village visits, with occasional weekend or holiday work as per community needs.
