  • Location: Ghoramara Islands, Sundarbans, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
  • Target Group: Entire island community (population ~5,700)

Overview

Ghoramara Island lies in one of India’s highest climate risk zones — classified as Very High Damage Risk Zone-B (Vb = 50 m/s) on the Wind and Cyclone Vulnerability Map of India, and facing a maximum storm surge risk of 12–13 meters as per the Flood Hazard Map of India. The island has endured repeated devastation from major cyclones such as Bulbul (2018), Amphan (2019), Yaas (2021) and Remal (2024).

Home to 1,125 households, including 356 displaced families, the population faces multiple vulnerabilities during extreme weather events due to fragile housing. In this context, SEED’s Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter, supported by JECAPCL, provides a critical life-saving infrastructure for the island. Designed to serve as a safe haven during extreme weather events, the shelter can accommodate over 400 residents during cyclones and floods.

Key Activities:

  • Emergency shelter during cyclones and floods.
  • Community training on disaster preparedness and response
  • Platforms for women-led livelihood activities and SHG meetings
  • Community-led mangrove restoration and nursery management.
