Supported By: Signify Foundation
Location: 40 villages across 4 blocks- Kakdwip, Pathar Pratima, Namkhana and Sagar; Sunderban, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
Target Group: 3500+ off grid households
Status: Ongoing since 2021
Project Overview
Lighting Lives in Sundarbans is SEED’s flagship clean energy initiative, addressing the severe energy poverty faced by climate-displaced communities in the ecologically fragile islands of the Sundarbans. The project brings solar-based lighting and energy solutions to off-grid and climate-affected villages, where rising salinity, river erosion and migration disrupt livelihoods and access to basic services. It aims to reduce carbon footprint, improve safety, livelihood opportunities and children’s education, while promoting women-led climate resilience.
Key Components:
• Installation of 3500 solar home lighting systems in marginalized households.
• Deployment of 300 solar streetlights in key village locations for safe mobility.
• Capacity building of 100 local women’s groups for system maintenance and sustainable energy governance.
• Community education across 40 villages on climate adaptation, renewable energy and low-carbon lifestyles.
Impact So Far:
• 2600 families transitioned to clean lighting, eliminating reliance on fossil fuels.
• Marketplaces now remain open longer even after dusk; hence income has increased by 20%.
• Improved nighttime work opportunities in fishing, net weaving, betel leaf stacking etc. increased household income by 15%.
• 30% reduction in energy costs as villagers save on kerosene expenses and redirect funds to food, education and healthcare.
• 80% reduction in kerosene usage, cutting 6,500 kg of carbon emissions per month.
• Improved air quality, lead to a reduction in respiratory illnesses among 1,000+ households.
• Reduced human casualties and livestock attacks by tigers, crocodiles and snakes by 60%.
• 40% decline in wildlife-induced poverty by preventing the loss of breadwinners, reducing household debt.
• Deterred wildlife from entering farmlands, protecting crops and impacted over 1,000 farming households.
• 35% increase in study hours as students now have reliable lighting for evenings, improving academic performance.
• 50% reduction in safety concerns for women as well-lit streets and homes allow them to move freely after dark.
• Enhanced nighttime mobility for elderly and differently able with solar-lit pathways.
Vision:
Through Lighting Lives in Sundarbans, SEED envisions building energy-resilient, women-led and low-carbon communities in one of India’s most climate-stressed regions — empowering people to adapt with dignity and hope.
