SEED’s Play for Nature initiative builds on our extensive experience of using sports for social change, by integrating biodiversity conservation education into structured sports-based programs for youth in climate-vulnerable regions. Supported by AFL (Australian Football League), this project engages marginalized youth across West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand & Bihar, combining football-based life skills training with awareness of local ecosystems, conservation practices and climate action.
Key Components:
• Establishment of “Play for Nature Clubs” in target schools and communities.
• Football-based sessions promoting teamwork, leadership and environmental stewardship.
• Interactive modules on biodiversity, waste management, sustainable living and nature conservation, woven into sports activities.
• Capacity building of local youth as eco-leaders and peer educators.
Impact So Far:
• Increased environmental awareness among 2000 children.
• 60 training workshops on TOT model; 500 youth successfully trained.
• 50% of girls participate in sports and conservation activities.
• Integration of waste reduction and hygiene practices in club activities.
• Strengthened community ownership for local biodiversity protection through sport-led engagement.
• Positive shifts in school attendance, leadership skills and social cohesion.
Vision:
Through Play for Nature, SEED aims to create a generation of young eco-leaders, where children learn to value nature, practice sustainable behaviors and become ambassadors for biodiversity conservation — both on and off their playing fields.
