Project 7 Image
  • Supported By: CSR of T & I Global Ltd.
  • Location: Ghoramara and Sagar Islands, Sundarbans, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
  • Target Group: Currently serving 328 climate-impacted children (aged 6–18 years)
  • Status: Ongoing since 2015

Project Overview

SEED’s NFE (Non-Formal Education) Centres initiative is designed to support the learning and resilience of children and adolescents from climate-vulnerable communities in the fragile islands of the Sundarbans. Ghoramara and Sagar Islands are increasingly impacted by sea-level rise, displacement and disrupted education systems. Many children in these regions face interrupted schooling or have dropped out entirely. The NFE Centres provide a vital bridge to education and skills, fostering both academic growth and cultural identity in these remote, underserved communities.

Key Components:

  • Operation of 2 NFE Centres across both islands, catering to 628 enrolled children.
  • Remedial education for school-going children to address learning gaps.
  • School readiness for first generation learners with Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN).
  • Mainstreaming support for dropouts, preparing and facilitating their reintegration into formal schools.
  • Skill-based training for older children (15–18 years) in Pattachitra, Jatra performance and Water hyacinth-based eco-crafting.
  • Life skills and psychosocial support build resilience and self-confidence among learners.
  • Community and parental engagement to foster sustained participation and educational continuity.

Impact So Far:

  • Significant reintegration of 230 out-of-school children into mainstream education pathways.
  • 658 children successfully admitted into formal govt. schools through school readiness initiative.
  • 198 girls successfully bought back to the education system.
  • Improved performance of 30% of children in key subjects through remedial classes.
  • Revitalizations of local art forms among 150 youth, creating pathways for creative expression and potential livelihoods.
  • Enhanced community ownership and support for children's education through active parental involvement.

Vision:

Through the NFE Centres, SEED envisions a future where climate-impacted children and youth in the Sundarbans can reclaim their right to education, skills and cultural identity. The project seeks to empower a generation of resilient learners — equipped not only to cope with the challenges of climate change but to contribute positively to the sustainability and vibrancy of their communities.
