Mangrove Plantation in Sundarbans & East Kolkata Wetlands

Mangrove Plantation in Sundarbans & East Kolkata Wetlands
  • Supported By: JECAPCL (Tata Group), Rotary International, SICOM (Ministry Of Environment & Climate Change) and Conveyor Belt India Pvt. Ltd.
  • Location: Sundarbans (multiple islands) and East Kolkata Wetlands
  • Duration: 2014–2022

Project Overview

The East Kolkata Wetlands, a designated Ramsar site, is a fragile ecosystem supporting thousands of marginal communities through sustainable fishing, farming, and wastewater-based livelihoods. However, years of encroachment, pollution, and climate-induced stresses have led to rapid degradation of mangrove cover, loss of biodiversity, and increasing flood vulnerability. To restore the ecological health of this critical urban wetland system, SEED launched a community-led Mangrove Restoration Programme in collaboration with government and international partners. The project mobilises local youth, SHG women and fisherfolk to propagate, plant and monitor native mangrove species across strategic creeklines and degraded wetland banks.

Key Components

  • Planted 12.7 lakhs mangroves planted, restoring 65 hectares of vulnerable land.
  • Engaged 2,000+ women in plantation activities and community-based nurseries.
  • Promoted a bio-rights model linking ecological stewardship with livelihoods.

Impact So Far

  • Enhanced coastal resilience, reduced soil erosion and boosted local fisheries.
  • Empowered women with steady income and leadership roles in environmental action.
