Solar Electrification of Coastal Biodiversity Centre
Supported By: CSR Initiative of T&I Global Ltd.
Coverage: Coastal Biodiversity Conservation Centre (CBCC), Raypara, Ghoramara Island, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal
Duration: 2024
Delivered Infrastructure: Solar rooftop power system with battery bank, energy-efficient LED lighting, fans, charging stations, and classroom lighting
Capacity Building: 20 local youth and women trained in solar system maintenance, usage monitoring, and energy conservation
Project Overview
Located in Ghoramara Island — a highly climate-sensitive and erosion-prone zone — SEED’s Coastal Biodiversity Conservation Centre (CBCC) plays a critical role in community-based environmental education and wetland restoration. However, frequent power outages and the absence of stable grid electricity often disrupted awareness programs and community engagement efforts. To address this, a decentralized clean energy solution was implemented through rooftop solar electrification. This initiative ensures uninterrupted energy access for regular capacity building, eco-literacy workshops, and wetland conservation training. Local youth and women were equipped with the knowledge and tools to maintain the system, ensuring long-term sustainability and community ownership.
Impact So Far
• Ensured uninterrupted clean energy access for environmental awareness sessions and training programs.
• Enabled the CBCC to function as a year-round green education hub for 1,200+ learners, SHG members, and volunteers.
• Reduced dependence on diesel, curbing carbon emissions and air pollution.
• Empowered local youth and women with skills in solar upkeep and energy conservation.
• Demonstrated a scalable model for clean energy infrastructure in off-grid, climate-vulnerable locations.
