Solar-Powered Deep Tubewell
  • Supported By: Bansal Foundation
  • Coverage: Raypara Village, Ghoramara Island, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal
  • Duration: 2023
  • Delivered Infrastructure: Solar-powered deep tubewell with overhead tank and piped water distribution for irrigation and potable use
  • Capacity Building:

Project Overview

In water-scarce and saline-prone Ghoramara Island, climate change has intensified irrigation and drinking water shortages. Traditional diesel pumps added to economic strain and environmental degradation. SEED introduced a solar-powered deep tubewell solution to ensure year-round access to freshwater for farming and domestic use. This climate-smart irrigation system reduces dependency on fossil fuels while improving agricultural yields, health outcomes, and water security for the island’s marginalized communities.

Impact So Far

  • Provide year-round irrigation to 60 smallholder farmers, minimizing climate-induced crop losses.
  • Enhanced food security by supporting vegetable and paddy cultivation in saline-sensitive areas.
  • Ensured safe drinking water access for 150 families, reducing waterborne illnesses.
  • Eliminated the need for diesel pumps, cutting energy expenses by ₹1,000–1,200/month per household.
  • Improved school attendance among children by reducing water-fetching burdens on girls.
  • Boosted climate resilience through groundwater recharge and sustainable water management.
