Project Overview

As one of the most cyclone-prone islands in the Sundarbans, Ghoramara lacks stable electricity even in its emergency shelters. To ensure dignified and secure refuge during disasters, SEED solar-electrified its multipurpose cyclone shelter with a rooftop PV system and battery backup. Beyond emergency use, the facility now doubles as a clean energy-powered learning and community hub, hosting awareness programs, training, and women-led activities. This project models how solar power can reinforce disaster resilience in last-mile regions.

Impact So Far

  • Enabled 24/7 power backup for 300+ evacuees during cyclones and floods.
  • Enhanced safety and well-being for women, children, and elderly during emergencies.
  • Supported community training under stable lighting conditions year-round.
  • Replaced diesel use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions..
  • Established SEED’s shelter as a green model for disaster response in coastal India.
