Project Overview

As part of the World Bank-funded Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) initiative, this project focused on transforming coastal farming practices in Sagardwip by introducing climate-resilient and organic methods tailored to saline-affected soils. Farmers were trained in sustainable techniques such as precision agriculture, vermi composting, and the use of bio-inputs. Special emphasis was placed on organic betel leaf cultivation, enabling the community to adopt cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches. The initiative resulted in improved soil health, enhanced productivity, and a significant reduction in chemical usage, laying the groundwork for long-term agricultural sustainability in vulnerable coastal zones.

Impact So Far

  • Introduced organic farming, precision agriculture and climate-resilient practices like vermi compost, bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides across the Sagardwip.
  • Trained 1425 farmers in sustainable betel leaf cultivation suited to saline-prone areas.
  • Reduced input costs by 35% and improved crop yields by 20%.
  • Strengthened soil and water conservation in erosion-prone zones.
