Supported By: Rice Research Institute, Government of West Bengal
Coverage: Patharprotima Block, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal
Duration: 2018- Till date
Beneficiaries: 550 farmers
Objective: To enhance adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers through salt-tolerant cropping and localized seed bank systems in saline-prone coastal areas.
Project Overview
SEED launched this initiative to address the rising salinity in coastal farmland, which was rendering traditional crops nonviable. The project aims to build agricultural resilience among smallholder farmers by promoting salt-tolerant varieties and sustainable organic farming methods. Working closely with the Rice Research Institute, SEED distributed stress-tolerant paddy and vegetable seeds and trained farmers in water-smart practices and organic input usage. Community-based seed banks were also introduced to secure long-term access to quality seeds.
Impact So Far
• Distributed and cultivated 12 varieties of salt-tolerant paddy and vegetable seeds.
• Reduced crop loss from saline floods by 45%.
• Promoted organic inputs and water-smart practices across 250 acres.
• Created seed banks in 10 villages to ensure seed security year-round.
