  • Objective: To revive indigenous fish culture practices and promote sustainable livelihoods through low-cost, eco-friendly aquaculture models in peri-urban and coastal wetland zones.

Project Overview

SEED aimed to restore ecological balance while creating sustainable livelihoods by reviving indigenous aquaculture practices in sewage-fed wetlands. The project introduced bamboo pen culture for catfish breeding and emphasized environmental stewardship by mandating fingerling release into wild water bodies. Women participated through Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), gaining both income and skills in eco-friendly aquaculture enterprises, thus reducing climate-linked migration.

Impact So Far

  • • Introduced bamboo pen-based induced breeding of magur (catfish), optimizing nutrient-rich sewage-fed canals.
  • • Ensured ecological restoration by releasing 20% of fingerlings back into local water bodies.
  • • Created steady, year-round income, reducing seasonal migration among tribal communities.
  • • Empowered women through active participation in Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) and enterprise management.
